Fun Facts

G.D. Drum put his life savings on the line in exchange for Maiden Flour Mill. Working with two employees, Mr. Drum laid the foundation for what would later become known as Maiden Flour Mills, Inc.- Mocksville Flour Mills, Inc., Hickory Flour Mills and ultimately would be built into today’s Midstate Mills in Newton, NC.
Maiden Flour Mill increased production from 2,500 pounds per day to 17, 500 pounds per day. Mr. Drum’s reputation for honest dealing, sound financial policies, and for providing good products at fair prices ensured Maiden Flour Mill’s secure foothold in the marketplace.
By 1942 the market for Maiden Mills’ flour, corn meal and feed products had expanded to surrounding counties in Central North Carolina. Mr. Drum acquired Mocksville Flour Mills in November of 1942, increasing daily output to 40,000 pounds.

Hickory Mills was purchased to boost production to 60,000 pounds per day.
Disastrous fires struck Hickory Mills in 1953 and again in 1955 at Maiden Mills. From out of the rubble of the Maiden and Hickory Mills fires comes the idea of a new, state of the art modern plant that would consolidate production to one location.
The dream becomes reality when a new state-of-the-art facility is opened in Newton, North Carolina. Mr. Drum and his executive team incorporate the new plant as Midstate Mills.

Arthur Smith and The Crackerjacks sang the praises of Southern Biscuit Flour on WBTV on Thursday nights.

The Midstate Mills staff knew how to have fun!  These ladies were the winners of the grocery packaging hat contest.
